BEXLEY HOUSE
Project Type
RESIDENTIAL | CONCEPT | COMPLYING DEVELOPMENT | ALTERATIONS AND ADDITIONS
Location
Bexley, NSW
Date
2023
Tasked with extending an existing single-storey house while enhancing its energy efficiency, I developed a design concept that retained much of the original structure while reorienting the living spaces to face north and introducing generous shaded outdoor areas. By applying passive solar design principles, such as wrapping the building in high-performance insulation; increasing north facing glazing; and incorporating carefully considered shading, I significantly improved the home’s year-round thermal comfort while minimising energy costs.
The design adhered to the requirements for Complying Development under the Housing Code, eliminating the need for a lengthy DA approval process. By creatively adapting the original rooms and designing a seamless rear extension, the concept offers flexible spaces that cater to both large family gatherings and smaller private areas for sleeping or work, meeting the client’s needs for versatility and functionality.
